A Midsummer Night's Dream central theme is love and all of its complications. The story focuses on three groups of characters: the two sets of lovers, the fairies, and the craftsmen. Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father wants her to marry Demetrius. To escape this fate she and Lysander plan to elope. However, Demetrius follows them to foil their plans, and he is pursued by Helena, who loves him. To make matters worse mischievous Puck cast a spell on them so now both men love Helena. In the words of Lysander "The course of true love never did run smooth". Meanwhile, a group of wannabe actors rehearse a poorly-written play and soon all find their lives changed by the doings of the fairy king and queen. Magic, passion, humor, and romance are the ingredients for this remarkable tale of true love.
The Riotous Youth program puts classic plays into the hands of Maryland youth, ages 11-18, the 12 week process allows them to explore the Shakespeare's words and channel their own experiences to breathe life into a play. Students gain knowledge of what it takes to put on a production while also learning the beauty, versatility and meaning of Shakespeare’s language.
